Facts About Chronic Pain And Its Relief at Wellness Plus Clinic

The therapies our clinic provides are effective affordable and safe ways of relieving chronic pain. They have advantages over traditional pain treatment which relies on medications that are expensive, have negative side effects and may be addictive. Narcotics are not as effective for chronic pain and, when used for long periods of time, actually make patients more sensitive to pain. For every dollar spent on pain medication, another dollar is spent treating a complication associated with that medication.

With chronic pain, there is pathological reorganization of the nervous system in which nerve fibers transmitting painful impulses to the brain become “trained” to deliver pain signals better. With time, pain increases, and as chronic pain persists, it may become more irreversible and less responsive to treatment. Chronic pain interferes with short-term memory and can age the brain up to 20 times faster than normal.

A new and exciting pain relief treatment offered exclusively by our doctors changes the paradigm for treating chronic pain by treating the pathology and not merely masking pain. The origin of chronic pain is in the nervous system. Because nerves function electrically, chronic pain can be considered an electrical malfunction. The nervous system, and the way electrical signals are conducted, is disrupted in the chronic pain syndromes. Chronic pain syndromes include: fibromyalgia, chronic low back pain, arthritis, chronic headaches and neuropathy.

On any given day, 50 million Americans suffer from chronic pain. Most are over the age of 50, and interestingly, women are at higher risk than men for experiencing chronic pain, and they are also more likely to be disabled by pain than men are. Chronic pain has been shown to weaken the immune system, impair healing, disturb sleep patterns, and worsen if not cause neuropsychiatric conditions such as depression, anxiety and fatigue.

Chronic Pain is a common problem of older patients in which aging, past injuries, scar tissue, failing ligaments, tendons, degenerating joint spaces, along with weakening muscles, and sensitive nerves are all taking a toll on your body.  All this is further compromised with a slowing metabolism leading to daily pain that makes most feel they just have to learn to live with pain. At Wellness Plus Clinic, we know pain is inevitable.  But, suffering is optional. You can be helped and maintain a much better quality of life.  We are noted for partnering with our patients to facilitate the changes necessary to allow you to once again live an active, enjoyable and productive life.

Types of Chronic Pain:

  • Fibromyalgia: A chronic condition causing pain, stiffness, and tenderness of the muscles, tendons, and joints.  Fibromyalgia is also characterized by restless sleep, awakening feeling tired, fatigued, and depression.  Many times when the pain is treated successfully the depression leaves also.
  • Arthritis: The word arthritis literally means joint inflammation but is often used to refer to a group of more than 100 rheumatic diseases that can cause pain, stiffness and swelling in the joints.
  • Neuralgia: This is a painful disorder of the nerves that is characterized by severe, sharp pain along the course of a nerve, such as sciatica or a shooting type pain extending into the arms or hands.  It may feel like a tingling or burning sensation. Shingles is a form of neuralgia.

Acute Pain:

Acute pain is usually caused by some form of trauma such as, slips, falls, repetitive motions or strains and sprains, often as a result of sports injuries or slips and falls. The faster you treat this type of pain , the less likely it will become chronic.

Post Surgical Swelling & Pain During Recovery:

Recovery from surgery can be less painful and you can heal quicker with less scar tissue and residual problems if treated appropriately.  The key to the quickest and most complete recovery is to start a therapeutic treatment as soon as possible. If these conditions are left untreated or neglected, they can become chronic pain problems later.
Swelling, congestion and compromised circulation are culprits in slow or poor healing following surgery, especially of those involving joints.  You will be surprised how effective your treatment can be at Wellness Plus Clinic.  If you have been receiving physical therapy with little or no effect, call us today!
